Circadian Lighting and Assisted Living Facilities

They've got a hotfix rolling out, but it's been a month or two of random lights turning on or refusing to turn off. Makes the evenings more laid back and I'm able to sleep a bit easier. SAD lights are used at distance of 1-2 ft to get that brightness.

I used to oversleep but it's completely fixed by leaving my phone in the living room so I must get out of the bed and shut the alarm off. Mine also has a setting to allow the phone if people call twice within 3 minutes or something. And my phone automatically goes on do-not-disturb prior to bedtime, so no concern of seeing a notification that gets my brain going. And definitely use f.lux or equivalent, which is built in these days (at least the phones I've had recently).

BIOS Origins – NASA and Circadian Lighting

LED drawbacks. There are health implications to a home full of LED lights. Former architect, lighting expert, and professor at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai,Dr. Mariana Figueirorecommends you take your own measurements and calculations to make sure you understand what you’re getting from the manufacturer. Can be very expensive.A whole house Smart lighting system that’s able to control all three conditions to send signals to the brain and trigger circadian responses is a pricey endeavor. I'll suggest to you also the adaptive lighting integration over the circadian rhythm one.

If it was up to me, I'd get rid of the hanging lights and go back to the 90's light canisters in the ceiling. There was a 5000K fluorescent above the closet that I replaced with a fixture from the thrift store, that has a mix of orange and red bulbs. Circadian lights and dimmed (don't have color bulbs there) bathroom lights at night with motion sensor are alone a reason big enough to start this domotic journey.

For seniors especially, it’s important to implement circadian lighting that doesn’t compromise comfort and familiarity and is designed to align with biological functions that are core to keeping humans healthy. BIOS SkyBlue is the only electric lighting solution that brings the natural daytime light signal indoors to create a more comfortable and natural environment for the elderly. It can be integrated into virtually any architectural light fixture—from common areas to bedrooms to cafeterias—and enables a comfortable and familiar visual experience for both residents and staff. Studies have shown that sky-blue light signals—usually only available through exposure to daylight—can help elderly residents mitigate the effects of this “biological twilight” state by providing a stronger daytime light signal. BIOS SkyBlue lighting solutions bring this natural daytime light signal indoors to help improve mood and sleep while reducing symptoms of nighttime wandering, depression, agitation, and sundowners syndrome (in Alzheimer’s disease patients).

I would like to recommend Adaptive Lighting in favor of Circadian Lighting. It has the added benefit of being able to detect if someone manually adjusts the brightness or color, and then stops the automatic adjustment for that light. Only caveat with the Hue bulbs is that if you need to reset them for any reason, you'll need either a Hue Hub or one of their dimmers to do that. So I guess there's a little lock-in on that front, but it's not an ecosystem thing where you're stuck. I have about 20 of those bulbs around my house and they all work great with the generic Zigbee coordinator attached to my Home Assistant box.

How Lighting Can Help You Create a Good Sleep Routine

In Environmental Science & Policy with a specialty in environmental communications from Duke University. In addition to penning over 1,000 mbg articles on topics from the water crisis in California to the rise of urban beekeeping, her work has appeared on Grist, Bloomberg News, Bustle, and Forbes. She's spoken about the intersection of self-care and sustainability on podcasts and live events alongside environmental thought leaders like Marci Zaroff, Gay Browne, and Summer Rayne Oakes. (though it's not always clear whether these benefits are the result of the circadian system or a direct effect of the light itself). SceneSwitch has three color modes that not only look different, but also emit differing amounts of blue light. Flick the power again, and the bulb will be much dimmer and more relaxing. BIOS brings unique expertise in the understanding and application of the fundamental science behind human and plant biology. BIOS continues to research and innovate based on this unique expertise, studying human health and how our environment influences our sense of well-being. Neil Yorio and Robert Soler who met at the NASA Space Life Sciences Lab – BIOS has continued to evolve its biological lighting technologies.

TRANSFORMING CARE THROUGH CIRCADIAN LIGHTING FOR OLDER ADULTS AND THOSE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA

I switched my office to use motion bulbs after doing circadian lighting just because the color value wouldn't update the bulb until it was on for a few seconds (due to Home Assistant's 5 second poll time for Hue). You can get around this by using the MagicHue libarary in Node-RED to poll for changes every second just like I did in my post Fixing slow Hue motion sensors in Home Assistant using Node-RED. Circadacare is a science-led health tech company, and our systems promote healthy human circadian rhythms to improve the quality of life of older adults for happier, more engaging lives.

Harvard Medical school has a whole division dedicated to it . The Habitat dimmer switch was okay, but I'd still walk into the bathroom from a black hallway and blind myself, as I never checked the light level before hitting the switch. On surveying the dimmers at Home Depot, I settled on the kind that starts "off", and gradually increases the light level. If I was "working on my makeup" the amount of light would be just right, but that's not me. It was the kind that has a little lever next to the on/off switch - basically you decide on the amount of light, then it's pre-set to that amount.

Circadian lighting with Home Assistant: Like f.lux, but for your house

Essentially, our internal processes are governed by our circadian rhythm.... BIOS Nightfall A-19 LED light bulb brings the outdoor beauty of a campfire indoors, facilitating sleep initiation, promoting sleep consolidation, and reducing skyglow. SkyBlue® A21 is an LED retrofit bulb, powered by BIOS SkyBlue® patented circadian technology. Our sophisticated lighting algorithms have been developed over a 14 year period and are backed by academic research and guidance. Fine granular control and automated light scenes have been developed for the farming sector, and all of this can be delivered without complex programming; the user can simply and easily adjust light settings to achieve the best results. Recent studies have shown that the productivity of office workers has increased by up to 20% following the introduction of human-centric lighting.

“Morning light sets our circadian rhythms for the day and helps us to be alert when we’re supposed to be alert, be sleepy when we’re supposed to be sleepy, and go to sleep and stay asleep,” she says. We need this light exposure, she adds, “because our inherent circadian cycles don’t run to a 24-hour clock”. Bender means that if we are sequestered in, say, a dark cave, our sleep cycles typically begin to drift later and later as our body clocks are not internally calibrated to a perfect 24 hours (the average is 24.2). This syndrome, sleep onset drift, can also occur in winter, when we’re exposed to less daylight. I discovered circadian hacking in the snowy winter of 2018, during a brutal five-month bout of insomnia, which was provoked, I now know, by low seasonal light levels combined with irregular night-time wakes to feed my newborn son. Can be easy and hands off.The more advanced circadian lighting systems are programmable so that the lights change intensity and color spectrum at the appropriate times of day without you needing to think about it.

HomeKit adaptive lighting requires an always-at-home iPad or Apple TV to set it up. Until I have those I find manually setting a large amount of Hue schedules at various times to be OK. I use it because it's dark in the morning here in winter so I want a daylight colour to help wake up. Over the last few years, the role of the home has fundamentally changed. Once spaces of retreat and relaxation, in 2020, homes needed to become workspaces, gyms, and day cares overnight. In that process, we learned just how much a well-designed home could support us.
